Goals Need Better Routines

September changes our routines whether we intend it or not. School starts, daylight shifts, schedules change, social calendars change. So rather than simply falling into a new routine, why not choose one intentionally?

September naturally brings a "new year" kind of mentality for me. It's the beginning of the final 3rd of the year. And it gives me one more chance to reassess my year's goals and priorities so I can end the year strong.

When it comes to goals, routines are where the magic happens. Goals can be set, but without the habits and routines to fuel them, most are doomed to fail.

Let's start with some facts.

  • A habit is an acquired behavior pattern you follow regularly until it becomes almost involuntary.

  • A routine is a compilation of habits. By definition, routines are commonplace tasks, chores, or duties done regularly or at specified intervals. Your day can include several routines.

Now, here are a few reasons I think you should take routines more seriously.

Routines simplify my life. I build my routines intentionally. They have a purpose and an expected outcome. If I follow the habits in the routine, I move the needle on the goal they are meant to fuel. For example, my evening routine consists of washing my face, brushing my teeth, and laying out my workout clothes. If those clothes are out, then digging in drawers in the dark while my husband sleeps doesn't need to happen, and my ability to forego the workout diminishes.

Routines hold me accountable. I'm a list maker. The routine has been well thought out and refined as needed to serve me best. It's a small (albeit important) win for my day when I do what I planned.

Routines put out the fires caused by Shiny Object Syndrome. Something will always vie for my time. Routines keep me focused and provide structure. I put the shiny objects on a list. They don't, though, get to compete for my time.

Routines sometimes get a bad rap for being mundane or too rigid. That usually means the routine was built by default. When you build one with intention, a routine can protect what matters and adjust when your life changes. No matter the time of year.
